Marquette is the democrat stronghold in the UP. That said, Bush’s visit to the UP helped him out in most parts of this county outside of the city itself (most likely due to NMU). The county, like most of the UP, is more favorable to moderate to conservative democrats over a liberal like John Kerry, although they’ll back a liberal over most republicans unlike most of the rest of the UP. The small townships of Humboldt flipped to Bush, Turin flipped to Kerry, and Ewing flipped to a tie.

Redistricting changed the state representative district here. Powell township was given to the Western UP district, and the rest of it stayed in the Marquette centered district. The Western UP district is a possible swing district (52.44% Bush, but more democrat locally) with a strong candidate, and the Marquette district is solid democrat (51.63% Kerry, more democrat locally).
