This was a district the GOP finally picked up in 2010. They went for it in 2002, and lost to a very strong democrat in Mickey Switalski who served two terms. 2010 was the right timing, and the GOP won it with Tory Rocca. This is a competitive district that under the old setup, leaned democrat thanks to Roseville and all of Clinton Township. The current district drops Roseville, Fraser, Utica and about 1/3 of Clinton Township. It picks up Macomb Township, and keeps all of Sterling Heights and 2/3 of Clinton Township. Those changes are game changers, and should keep this district after Rocca is termed out. That said, nothing is safe in Macomb County.
I think the vote spreads are actually more favorable than those listed here, since I believe a lot of the real bad partisan Clinton Twp precincts are those near Gratiot south of Mt Clemens. That's in Bieda's district. Sterling Heights is competitive and has been for years. This portion of Clinton Township is probably competitive as well. Macomb Township leans GOP. It'll be interesting to see what happens here in 2018, when Rocca's termed out.
