Huron County and the thumb area is tough to peg. It is conservative and populist, and not necessarily republican. In 2004, Bush did better in the Gore areas here, but Kerry did better in the 2000 Bush areas. Guns are big issue here, and the dems who do best (Barcia) are pro-2a. Mike Green wrote the conceal carry law here, and would have won the state senate race against anyone outside of Barcia.

Redistricting only slightly changed the state rep and state senate districts, but the congressional district was carved up in a major way. Jim Barcia’s Bay City based district which wrapped around Saginaw Bay was elimated. Candice Miller’s district consists of the most Republican areas of Macomb County, and stretchs up to most of the thumb, including Huron County. Bay City, Saginaw, and Tuscola County were placed into Dale Kildee’s Flint based district. The Northern Part of Barcia’s district was given to Bart Stupak’s UP based district.
