Gladwin County is a swing area which prefers NRA and/or social conservative democrats. Dale Sheltrown won here twice. Pro-life Bart Stupak won here twice, but Granholm, Gore, and Kerry lost here at the top of the ticket. There are many state workers here, mostly in the corrections department.

Redistricting put Gladwin in a state rep district with Clare, Arenac, and part of Bay County. This district leans slightly democrat, but went for Tim Moore who benefitted from a gay marriage vote by Jennifer Elkins.
