This is a usually solid republican district, although I think it could be competitive in a bad year with the right candidate for the dems. Even McCain won the district, although someone like Gary McDowell could have probably given Walker a scare. He's running again for the 1st district against Benishek. We'll see if he makes a run for this in 2014 if Benisek wins the rematch. McDowell's strong because he cuts into the GOP base in Emmet county, and won the usually GOP leaning but not overwhelmingly so Mackinac and Chippewa Counties. Traverse City leans democrat, as do parts of the UP, but the townships around Traverse City tilt heavily republican.

The district did not change much, picking up federal republican leaning and somewhat state democrat leaning Luce County (Corrections officers) and dropping competitive and somewhat democrat Presque Isle County.

Bob Carr was a late replacement for McDowell in 2010. McDowell planned on running for this seat, and switched to the congressional seat when Stupak retired. Howard Walker had no problems, winning big in all counties, including the UP counties which aren't east for a "troll" (those who live below the bridge) to win.
