2010 Results - Old District (26th)

This district is possibly the most socially liberal in the state outside of Ann Arbor City Limits. It's also possibly the most democrat white majority district outside of maybe Ann Arbor.
The old district covers Berkley, part of Oak Park, Huntington Woods, Ferndale, Hazel Park, and Pleasant Ridge. It keeps all of these areas, and adds the rest of Oak Park and tiny Royal Oak Township. Royal Oak Township is not Royal Oak. It's for intents and purposes an unofficial extension of the City of Detroit into Oakland County. 8 Mile and Wyoming area.
The old district was at least 70% democrat. The new district is even more democrat as the new areas added are all majority black. I think if demographic changes continue in Ferndale and to a lesser extent Hazel Park, it is possible for a major cultural clash in the primary between the upper middle class liberals in Huntington Woods and Pleasant Ridge (Jim Blanchard country) and gays (Ferndale currently), and the black ex-Detroiters. That would probably be more 10 years down the line, but it is something to watch in the future. Oak Park and Ferndale combined are about 1/2 of the new district.
