Republican Michigander’s prognosis – Safe Republican

District covers:
Benzie, Clare, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mecosta, Missaukee, Osceola, Roscommon, and Wexford Counties

This large rural district covers much of Northwestern and Central Northern Michigan. It leans Republican, but is not overwhelmingly so (it was stronger for Bush) with Manistee, Clare, Lake, and Roscommon sometimes voting for democrats. Benzie County isn’t a gimme as well. Leelanau is solidly republican, but took a real left turn in 2004 that needs to be watched in the future. That said, Missaukee County is the 2nd most Republican county in the state. Kalkaska, Mecosta, Osceola, and Wexford counties are all solidly Republican, and more so in 2004 than in 2000.

Michelle McManus won big in 2002, winning every county including democrat leaning Lake County. She is one of the strongest Second Amendment supporters in the State Senate, which fits well in this district. I don’t see her facing any serious threats, and this should be a safe republican district for 2006.
