Population – 87,904 (2000 Census)
Demographics – 96.17% White, .82% Black, .38% American Indian, .39% Asian, 1.07% Some other Race, 1.16% Two or more races, 3.11% Hispanic or Latino(of any race)
County Seat – Lapeer (pop 9072)

Lapeer County is in the SW portion of the thumb. It is East of Flint and West of Port Huron, and is north of Oakland County. It is largely rural, but becoming more exurban as people move from Oakland and Genesee Counties. It was recently a competitive county, but is becoming solidly republican.

Hadley, Metamora, Dryden, and Almont border Oakland County. Marathon Township is in the NW corner and borders Tuscola and Genesee Counties. I don’t know why that is so much democrat.

Lapeer took a strong GOP shift in 2004, and grew enough to that redistricting gave them their own state rep district in 2002. It also placed the whole county in a congressional district, instead of being split between a Flint and Bay City/thumb district.
