This district remains unchanged, covering Madison Heights and Royal Oak. It's one of those districts that when open is often in the "just good enough to lose" category. Incumbents usually win easily. It's been democrat since at least the 90's, if not earlier. Townsend replaced Marie Donigan, who replaced Dave Woodward.

Both Royal Oak and Madison Heights voted for Gore, Kerry, and Obama. Royal Oak is the "hipster" part of Oakland County, and Madison Heights usually votes with the rest of Southeastern Oakland County. However, neither of them vote to the same level of democrat strength as the areas just to the south of them like Ferndale, Huntington Woods, and Pleasant Ridge.

I consider this district safe for the democrats until proven otherwise.
