Allegan County - Updated (Part 1 - 1998-2004)

Allegan County is one of the "Dutch" counties in West Michigan on the Lake Michigan coast. It's one of the most Republican counties in the state, year in and year out, and the GOP needs a high margin of victory here to win statewide. Within the county is a couple of competitive areas and democrat areas that could factor in a couple of close races for state rep or congress. While McCain won this area in 2008, the results overall for that year, should give the GOP enough of a scare not to take Allegan County for granted.

It's influenced by four different areas. The Wayland area is near Grand Rapids. Otsego/Plainwell area is near Kalamazoo. Part of Holland extends into the county. The southwest portion is near South Haven.

The contested race was the district covering Saugatuck (rumored to be the gay capital of West Michigan) and its neighbor Douglas, which are democrat leaning. It also covers Laketown Township which went over 70% for Bush twice. The democrat Spritzer was unopposed. His district covers part of Allegan Township, Cheshire Township, Trowbridge Township, and Valley Township.

I was a little surprised at the democrat strength in Watson township, and the republican strength in Saugatuck Township, although I think the city influence there hasn't completely hit the rest of that township yet. Douglas incorporated recently into a city, so that changes things a bit. The rest wasn't as much of a shocker as the areas the dems win were competitive townships with either old union/former union areas or minority.(Lee Township was 28% minority as of 2000).

1998 was the year of John Engler and Geoffrey Fieger. Douglas did not exist as a city until after the 2004 election, so the votes from the then village of Douglas were considered part of Saugatuck Township.

Congressional districts were split between the 2nd District and Pete Hoekstra and the 6th District and Fred Upton. They still are split today in the county, but Upton now has most of Allegan County today. Both Hoekstra and Upton are still in congress today, but Hoekstra is now running for governor. The old 2nd District covered most of Allegan County, part of Barry County, Lake County, Manistee County, Mason County, Muskegon County, Newaygo County, Oceana County, Ottawa County, and Wexford County. The old 6th District covered part of Allegan County, Berrien County, Cass County, Kalamazoo County, St Joseph County, and Van Buren County.

Pete Hoekstra had a few bouts with Bob Shrauger, who had a close run for state senate in 2002 in the Muskegon area. Shrauger could beat Hoekstra who is in the most republican congressional district in the state, largely due to Ottawa County and his portion of Allegan County.

2000 was a more normal year with Bush v Gore instead of Fieger. This shows the split within the county. The Northend is much more Republican than the south end and that's the influence of Holland, Zeeland (the most Republican area in the state), and the suburbs of Grand Rapids. Gore won three areas. Lee Township, Plainwell, and Saugatuck. Otsego was real close and is right near Plainwell. Allegan as well was close. All except Saugatuck are in the southern end of the township. Saugatuck is the rumored gay capital of west Michigan.

2002 changed the districts slightly. Two state reps now represent part of the county. Fred Upton also has much more of the county than he did previously. The governor's race here shows the difference between Northern Allegan (with the exception of liberal Saugatuck) and Southern Allegan counties in their political alignment.I don't know exactly what causes that being an east sider, but I think that the Kalamazoo influence has something to do with it.

The State Senate district was changed to cover all of Allegan County, as well as Barry and Eaton Counties to the east. It's a solid Republican district, although by not as big of margin as the dems made up a lot of ground in all three of these counties since 2004. Patty Birkholz did not have any problems winning either of her terms. 2002 was a walk.

I don't get why the redistricting team put Otsego in the Van Buren based district, but that's the way it goes.

2004 was a good year for the GOP in Allegan County. There's still the big South/North disconnect though that you can see between the Grand Rapids suburb/Holland area based North and the South Haven/Kalamazoo based area. That becomes more of a factor in the arse kickings of 2006 and 2008.

Bush was able to win big here outside of the traditional strong democrat areas of Lee Township and the reported gay capital of West Michigan, Saugatuck. He even pulled out wins in the tougher Otsego/Plainwell areas.
