Sanilac Couty is a conservative county, but not always republican. They are more populist, but also have no use whatsoever for the limosine libs like John Kerry. They did vote for a moderate in Jim Barcia, although not against Mike Green who wrote the CCW law. The 83rd district campaign was a disaster, and John Espinoza has a very good reputation in the county, which made for an easy win for him. He’ll still have a very tough race because of the partisan makeup of the 54% district.

Redistricting changed some of the district. The congressional seat now consists of the thumb and part of Macomb County instead of the thumb, Saginaw, and Bay City. The state senate district now consists of the northern thumb and Bay County. The congressional district has all of Sanilac county and Northeastern St Clair County.

Sanilac County is a safe GOP County in most cases, but has some competitive districts in it.
