Alpena County is the most democrat county in Northeastern Michigan, although they split their ticket in federal races, as Bush nearly won it in 2000, and did win it in 2004. They prefer pro-Second Amendment democrats like Andy Neumann and Matt Gillard. Amazingly, the Alpena vote not enough for Neumann to win in 2002 over then Rep. Tony Stamas. Midland came through for him, and he upset Neumann. If Congressman Stupak retires, Alpena will be a major battleground in an open seat.
