Republican Michigander’s prognosis – Safe Republican
Clinton, Ionia, Montcalm, and Isabella Counties
The democrats would love to take out Alan Cropsey, but it is not going to happen.
About 35% of the district is in Clinton County. The rest of the counties are slightly more than a 1/5 and are roughly equal in voters. Isabella County is a swing county which tilts more democrat federally, and republican locally. Generally, Mt Pleasant itself is democrat with the rest of the county more GOP. Montcalm is Republican leaning outside of Greenville, but more populist. Ionia and Clinton Counties are solidly GOP. The City of Ionia itself sometimes goes democrat (moreso in off years) with the corrections workers, but not by enough to make the county close. In Clinton County, East Lansing is expanding northward into Bath Township (Both going leftward), but the rural areas are all solidly republican, and DeWitt still strongly leans that way, barring the John Engler revolt in 2002(where Cropsey still won big). Engler’s no longer the boss, and the revolt may go against Granholm this time.
This is staying in the GOP column.
