Anti-Brennan campaign signs from critic, not Drick

From the Ann Arbor News.

A Hamburg Township man has admitted to placing derogatory signs about a district court judge on the morning of the Aug. 8 primary election.

The red, white and blue, 20-by-30-inch signs said "Anyone but Brennan.''

In the primary race, 53rd District Court Judge Theresa Brennan easily outdistanced challengers Jay Drick and Christina Heikkinen, who are Howell attorneys. Brennan will face Drick in the Nov. 7 general election.

Casey Smith, an executive at a small local company, says he put up the signs because he had a negative courtroom experience with Brennan and believes she does not have the right temperament for the position. There was nothing illegal about the signs, but they caused a stir among local politicians, who speculated on who the instigator might be.

Some assumed, incorrectly, that Drick was the originator, because he launched a very aggressive campaign against Brennan, accusing her of being too liberal for conservative Republican Livingston County. Drick denied knowing anything about the signs.

Brennan has not commented on the signs.

Smith, who said he had the signs professionally made, said he is stepping forward with the admission now because he did not want people erroneously blaming Drick. He said he does not know Drick and has never met him, something Drick confirms. Although he concedes he is a registered Republican, Smith said the issue was not about politics. "It's a nonpartisan battle, and people should look at it as whether that person will make a good judge,'' Smith said.

"The case is closed,'' Drick said, adding that Smith's action involves "a free exercise of his constitutional rights.''

While I agree with Casey Smith, it wasn't the best use of tactics. That said, I'm glad he came forward with this, and I hope he expands on Brennan's courtroom demeanor.

Gee, you think after a judge ruled against you might be upset? I’m not a lawyer like you dan, but it seems to me when you have two sides, one will win and one and will be happy and one will lose and will be unhappy. The real test is that Judge Brennan has been endorsed by both defense lawyers and the prosecution.

For this Smith guy, a registered Republican, to say the issue was “not about politics” is so much BS after the partisan smear job you two tried to pull off.

I've been quick to criticize the attempt to inject partisanship in the Brennan/Drick race and have been accused of being such a Brennan supporter as to be her husband, but if someone thinks Brennan is a lousy judge and is willing to spend his money to let everyone else know, I say more power to him. I doubt that his party affiliation has anything to do with it and I doubt that whether he won or lost a particular case had all that much to do with it either. Most rational people can accept winning or losing as long as they feel they got a fair opportunity to make their case. I've found that the way they are treated has more to do with how they view the Courts than anything. If Smith thinks he wasn't treated right, he not only has every right to say so, he has a duty to say so. That's the only way we get good judges.

Livingston County is overwhelmingly Republican so it should not surprise anyone that this particular voter claims to be Republican. It would look more suspicious if he claimed to be a Democrat.

I think it is great that we have a citizen who has nothing to do with Dricks campaign, and is saying he does not want a war protestor as a judge in our community!!

Hey Bigshot, the article did not say that. What the article failed to state was what was the demeanor from Brennen that rankled Smith. The article is begging for that description and none is provided. Could be good ammo for Drick campaign but the Dricksters best be careful how they use the Smith complaint. I mean this guy spent a lot of $$$ on these signs. What makes this guy tick?

The "Dricksters" have stated they both have not and do not want to have anything to do with this issue. This is one person's view, and the Dricks want to be nowhere near this.
From what I read, this guy went home very angry at how the people ahead of him were treated in court, and then how he was treated. People who are angry will lash out. Maybe buying 50 signs in anger is better than punching a wall...who knows?

I think Mr Smith seems like a very strange bird. The signs certainly didn't hurt Brennan. I think he knows little about politics but loves smear tactics. He certainly did more to hurt Drick than Brennan.

I just want to know where I can get one of these signs, except I would go with a slightly different version:

DUMP GRANHOLM!
DUMP BRENNEN!

Wow, Drick is going to stay away from this? Amazing, a good political decision by him. Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

NewRedOne said...

Well, since he had nothing to do with it in the first place, it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Amazing how this guy doesn't know Drick. Seems to be the kind of company Drick likes to keep. Birds of a feather flock together...

NewRedOne said...

Wow, Virtous, that was some slam there. You just insulted half the people who come in here and participate.

I am Smith
I do not know Drick
I did put up signs at the polls because I had 3 days to right a wrong perpetrated by Granholm. This person is WRONG for this job. She has a very quick temper and virtually NO respect for citizens in her courtroom. I had no idea how bad a person can be for a job untill I saw this firsthand. Please go and sit in on her court. If she controls herself you have done your community a service. If it is Brennan normal you will vote for "ANYONE BUT BRENNAN".

Theresa Brennan doesn't listen well enough to hear what people are saying. She formulates conclusions early and does not allow the facts to lead to a decision. She creates her own version and uses her power to cut people off that may have a valid point of view. She is frequently disrespectful and abusive. People who voted for her surely have not observed her in court. Smith is right, do your homework, go see her in action, then decide.

Who Took the Signs?
Mr. SMith came forward, who stole 31 out of 36 signs? I want one. Theresa M. Brennan is a "Rogue Judge" with a contemptuous demeanor. She ignores information submitted by whomever she opposes, then renders unprepared decisions. Attorneys in practice for years are faced with an unpredictable judge who concocts new rules based on her own convoluted opinions instead of law and standard procedure. Brennan's courtroom is a crapshoot, you have no idea what the outcome may be.
